Latonya Wigginton

Latonya fell in love with the circus at the age of 12 and has been chasing her big-top goals ever since. She started at Flipside Circus in Brisbane, which gave her a solid grounding as an emerging circus artist. At 17 she moved to China and spent one year studying at the Beijing International Art School and another year working as a freelance performer.

She believes strongly in the power of art to bring about change and in 2014 spent three months working with SeaChange Arts in Great Yarmouth, UK. There she taught circus lessons to youth at risk and was part of community outreach programs. This connection also led to the opportunity to perform in a self-directed ensemble show, “Body Play” at L’Odyssée du Cirque festival in France.

In 2017 she graduated with a Bachelor of Circus Arts from the National Institute of Circus Arts, Melbourne and in 2018 completed a Bachelor of Business from the William Blue College of Hospitality Management.

Ever since she returned from China Latonya has been working on improving her Mandarin skills and so in 2018 was excited to tour China with Erth Physical Theatre as the Mandarin speaking co-host of their show Dinosaur Zoo.

Latonya loves breaking gender stereotypes as female base and in 2018 she co- produced the feminist show ‘Stand Here’ with Abby Kelso leading to the founding of Sparkle Society. The organisation aims to foster gender equality in the circus world and bring LGBTQIA+ stories to the stage.
